What’s New in the 2020 Ford Escape?

Ford totally redesigned the Escape for 2020, and the compact SUV comes standard with an impressive list of driver assistance features like forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. The new generation also received fresh powertrain options to offer greater performance than ever before.

Despite the compact designation, there’s nothing small about the Escape’s interior. The cabin can easily accommodate five adults on two rows of plush seating. In the back, it also comes with two full sets of LATCH connectors for fastening car seats. Every seat offers a generous amount of legroom, and the airy overhead space ensures that even taller passengers won’t feel cramped. Cabin materials are soft yet durable, and you can enhance your surroundings with available upgrades like simulated or genuine leather, heated front seats, and a panoramic moonroof.

The roomy cabin also sports plenty of cargo space, and it has more than 33 cubic feet available behind the back row. The Escape’s rear seats can also be folded to allow a total of 65.4 cubic feet for storage.

The Escape’s standard SYNC infotainment system is particularly easy to use and can be set up with a number of tech features like Bang & Olufsen sound, navigation, satellite radio, smartphone connectivity, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Standard safety features include driver drowsiness monitoring and Ford MyKey, which allows you to program volume and speed limits for secondary drivers.

The 2020 Escape stands out in its class as one of the most engaging compact SUVs on the road. Steering is both composed and responsive, and you can take corners with confidence. Its jolt-absorbing suspension also keeps the ride smooth even when the roads underneath are worn and rugged.

The redesigned SUV runs on a 180-horsepower turbocharged EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine, and a robust 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder is also available for even more muscle under the hood. Both engines come with a steady-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. When equipped to tow, the Escape can pull up to 3,500 pounds. Even with all that strength, the SUV maintains impressive gas mileage among its rivals.

History of the Ford Escape

Ford released the Escape in 2001, at a time when sport utility vehicles were just emerging as the go-to family transportation option. The new model combined the handling and maneuverability of a sedan with the interior space and comfort of a much larger vehicle, and it also featured the durability that Ford is respected for. Three years later, the Escape became the first SUV to offer an available hybrid drivetrain.

The original Escape sported a truck-like appearance, but the design was reimagined with new curves in 2008. Ford equipped the Escape with a bundle of new tech upgrades in 2017, and they also updated the styling inside and out. The Escape was completely redesigned in 2020, and many of the previous generation’s optional driver assistance systems were made standard features. The improvements that Ford has made all along the way demonstrate their lasting commitment to safety and quality.
